According to a press release signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Kano, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the emergency water intervention follows a directive approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The programme will deploy 166 solar-powered boreholes, designed to collectively supply 4,140,000 litres of clean, safe water daily to communities currently experiencing acute water shortages.
Short-term relief amid major waterworks overhaul
Dr. Hashim explained that while the state remains focused on permanent solutions, short-term measures are necessary to address current shortages. The government is currently overseeing the comprehensive rehabilitation of key facilities, including the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, and the Goron Dutse Water Reservoir Complex.
According to the Commissioner, engineering and rehabilitation works at these facilities are progressing steadily. The projects are expected to be completed within eight months of commencement, a milestone anticipated to significantly improve municipal water distribution across Kano metropolis and surrounding areas.
Data-driven allocation through public applications
To ensure equitable distribution, the Ministry has launched a digital portal to collect grassroots data and prioritise communities facing the most severe water challenges.
Dr. Hashim urged community members, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to submit applications promptly through the Ministry’s official borehole application platform. Applicants are required to provide the following details:
- Applicant’s name and contact information
- Local government area, ward, and community name
- Whether functional boreholes already exist in the area
- Estimated number of residents who will benefit from the installation
The submission portal is accessible via the Ministry’s official website: https://kanowaterproject.com
Reaffirming the administration’s long-term objectives, the Commissioner said the Kano State Government remains committed to sustainable infrastructure that improves the health, welfare, and overall quality of life of residents across the state.
