The attack occurred around noon on Monday as the professor was returning from a family visit in Maiduguri.
The abducted professor is among 30 candidates vying for the university’s vice-chancellor position. While officials have not commented, reports of the incident have spread on campus.
The attack adds to rising insecurity in Nigeria’s northeast, where Boko Haram continues deadly assaults despite military efforts. Recent incidents include the killing of soldiers, fishermen, and farmers in Borno State.
