The exclusion of the North-Central geopolitical zone from the proposed N2.4 trillion budget for regional development commissions has sparked widespread outrage, raising concerns over equity and inclusion in national resource allocation.
The budget, currently under review, includes allocations of N585.9 billion for the North West Development Commission, N498.4 billion for the South West Development Commission, N341.2 billion for the South East Development Commission, and N291 billion for the North East Development Commission.

However, no provision was made for the North-Central region, despite its significant contributions to national unity and development.
North-Central People’s Forum reacts
The Secretary-General of the North-Central People’s Forum, Mr. Khaleel Bolaji, expressed frustration over the exclusion, describing it as a continuation of the region’s historical marginalization.
Bolaji stated, “It was not expected that allocations would be made to regions without final presidential approval of their commissions, which should have been the case for both the South-West and North-Central.”
He emphasized the need for equity in resource distribution, highlighting the region’s strategic importance and its role in maintaining Nigeria’s unity.
“The North-Central, with its six states and the Federal Capital Territory, remains a critical region in Nigeria’s political, economic, and social fabric. Its exclusion from the budget is deeply disappointing,” Bolaji added.
Call for inclusion and fairness
Supporting this stance, Mr. Sule-Dikcson Audu, another regional spokesperson, underscored the challenges facing the North-Central, including insecurity, environmental crises, and economic setbacks.
Audu noted that the North-Central Development Commission would complement state and federal government efforts in addressing these issues.
“This exclusion could be an oversight, but it must be corrected. Fair treatment in national development is not negotiable,” Audu stated.
Hope for resolution
Political leaders, activists, and stakeholders from the North-Central region remain hopeful that the National Assembly will address the exclusion during the budget review process. They believe that the inclusion of the North-Central Development Commission is crucial for balanced regional development.
As discussions on the budget continue, the North-Central region remains resolute in its demand for fairness, urging the federal government and lawmakers to ensure that no region is left behind in Nigeria’s development agenda.
