The leaders made the call in a joint meeting held Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna. The meeting brought together all 19 state governors and the chairmen of the traditional councils across the region.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who chairs the Northern States Governors’ Forum, the leaders stressed the importance of collective action and peer review in addressing the region’s pressing concerns.

The Forum expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his ongoing efforts to address insecurity and infrastructure deficits in the North. It also resolved to collaborate with the Nigerian Governors Forum to develop strategies for enhanced support to federal security agencies.

In response to growing security threats, the Forum announced plans to reinforce local security initiatives and to establish interstate surveillance platforms to monitor joint borders.

The governors and traditional rulers also restated their backing for the creation of state police and urged the National Assembly to expedite legislative processes for its establishment.

The next meeting of the Forum is scheduled for August 30, 2025.
