KANO, NIGERIA — The political rift between Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, took a remarkably personal turn as the governor publicly criticized his erstwhile ally, claiming he lacks constructive ideas for development and thrives on media attacks.
According to a press statement released on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, and signed by the Governor’s Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the state’s chief executive delivered the sharp rebuke at the Government House in Kano. The governor made the remarks during a ceremony held to present the Certificate of Return to Hon. Shu’aibu Rabi’u Nagogo (Abba Gano), the newly elected member of the House of Representatives for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency following the recently concluded bye-election.

‘Grown Old With No Ideas’
Governor Yusuf expressed disappointment over Gwarzo’s continued media campaigns against his administration, maintaining that a politician of his age, stature, and extensive public service record should be offering strategic governance solutions rather than creating distractions. He argued that true leadership requires a commitment to public welfare rather than launching persistent attacks to regain political relevance ahead of future elections.
The governor did not mince words while assessing his former deputy’s current political posture, taking a direct swipe at his seniority.
“It is unfortunate that someone can grow old yet have no ideas beyond criticism. While criticism remains a necessary and healthy component of a robust democracy, it must be constructive, evidence-based, and aimed at advancing the public good rather than promoting narrow personal interests,” Governor Yusuf said.
The Root of the Separation Exposed
Explaining the circumstances surrounding their highly publicized political split, Governor Yusuf defended the separation between both camps. He further alleged that the former deputy had repeatedly displayed insubordination and a lack of respect for the political structure and stakeholders who facilitated his rise in state politics.
The governor also reminded Gwarzo of his political background, referencing his previous appointment in the local government administration system.
“Just because we made you Commissioner for Local Government does not mean we will allow you to keep trampling on us. That is why God separated us from you,” the governor stated.
Reassuring the electorate, Governor Yusuf said his administration remains focused on delivering critical infrastructure projects, promoting economic growth, and fulfilling its campaign promises. He added that the victory of Hon. Nagogo in the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa bye-election further reflects public support for the administration’s policies, warning that no amount of political criticism would distract the government from delivering democratic dividends across Kano State.
