Connie Chiume, the celebrated South African actress renowned for her role in the blockbuster film Black Panther, has passed away at the age of 72.

Chiume died on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg.

The Chiume family shared the news via Instagram, requesting privacy during this difficult time. The statement read: “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume.

Following the news, Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw expressed her condolences on Instagram, saying, “NO! Rest in peace Mum Connie. You were deeply loved & appreciated. My condolences to South Africa; they have lost a beautiful soul. Sleep well, my friend!”

The South African Government also honored Chiume’s legacy through a post on X, formerly Twitter. They stated, “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Chiume became a prominent figure on South African television with roles in notable series such as Mohlolohadi, Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, Rhythm City, Housekeepers, and Grassroots.

Her international fame was cemented with her performances in Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
