In a statement released by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union dismissed reports linking it to the strike, describing such claims as misleading. Dr. Sunmonu said CONUA has no reason to declare a dispute or join any industrial action, stressing that members should continue performing their duties to ensure minimal disruption to academic activities.
He explained that CONUA’s position was shaped by recent developments following a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, during which the government expanded the renegotiation committee of the 2009 agreement to include CONUA, a key demand of the union.
Dr. Sunmonu noted that after nationwide congresses held between September 18 and 24, members unanimously agreed to uphold engagement rather than disruption as the best approach to addressing challenges within the university system.
He further appealed to vice-chancellors to ensure the safety and protection of CONUA members who continue their legitimate duties during the strike period.
Dr. Sunmonu also urged students to remain committed to their studies without fear of interruption, reaffirming CONUA’s dedication to sustaining academic excellence and stability across Nigerian universities.
