The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has called for the inclusion of private universities across Nigeria in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Ajaero made the call while speaking with ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, during the Toyin Falola Show. He said it was time for ASUU to engage with the leadership of private universities to build a united front that would safeguard the interests of the nation’s education system.

He expressed concern over the continued victimization of ASUU members and criticized the federal government for failing to implement the agreements it reached with the union since 2009.

According to Ajaero, ASUU was initially separated from the NLC by government influence, and efforts were made to restrict its operations until the union won its independence through a court ruling.

He further noted that the rise of private universities was part of a broader attempt to weaken ASUU’s influence, stressing the need for unity among academic workers to ensure stronger advocacy for better working conditions and education standards in Nigeria
