The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, has appointed Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi as the institution’s substantive Vice Chancellor.

The announcement was made during the Council’s 80th Extraordinary Meeting on Friday and will take effect from 10 February 2026 for a non-renewable five-year term.

Professor Fawehinmi, currently Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, steps in after a period of acting leadership following controversies around former Vice Chancellor Professor Aisha Maikudi. The Council also extended the tenure of Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Mathew Adamu until 10 February 2026.

A Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology, Fawehinmi has extensive leadership experience, including roles as Head of Anatomy, Associate Dean, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Port Harcourt. He has held prominent positions in professional associations, including the Nigerian Medical Association and the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria.

Fawehinmi has received multiple awards for academic and community service, is a Fellow of both the Royal Anthropological Institute and the Academy of Medical Specialities of Nigeria, and has secured numerous national and international research grants.
