In a statement by his media aide, Tersoo Kula, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed the arrest of the suspects, adding that the victims were attacked on Monday night at Agan settlement near the tollgate on the outskirts of Makurdi while in transit. He described the killings as “barbaric and unacceptable” and assured that those responsible would face the full weight of the law.
Governor Alia also said he had spoken with his Kano counterpart, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and urged residents of both states to remain calm.
The victims were later buried at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, in a ceremony attended by National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu and Governor Yusuf.
Describing the attack as “unfortunate, cruel, and unjustifiable,” Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf called on the Benue State Government and security agencies to ensure swift justice. He also appealed to Kano residents to avoid any form of reprisal and allow lawful processes to prevail.
The Kano State Government has again urged residents to exercise restraint while reaffirming its commitment to the safety and rights of all Kano indigenes across the country.
