The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has debunked social media reports suggesting that he is in conflict with the Nigerian armed forces following a recent confrontation with a naval officer over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja.

Addressing journalists on Thursday in Abuja, Wike described the reports as false and said his actions were guided strictly by the law, not personal emotions. He insisted that the FCT Administration would not yield to intimidation or permit anyone, no matter their position, to flout land use regulations or obstruct lawful government activities.

He explained that individuals, regardless of their role or influence, must always act within the limits of the law. Wike said no one has immunity from legal accountability, even when acting under the instructions of influential figures.

The minister emphasized that disagreements should be handled peacefully, warning that using threats or undermining the government could set a dangerous precedent.

Wike dismissed claims of a personal feud with the military, noting that he has deep respect for the institution. He maintained that he will continue to work in harmony with security agencies and that there is no conflict between the FCT Administration and the armed forces.

He explained that whenever issues arise involving the armed forces, he engages the appropriate authorities, such as the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, or the president, to seek institutional solutions rather than confrontation.

The minister said the controversy had been exaggerated by individuals who want to portray him as being at odds with the military. He reiterated that the FCT Administration remains focused on protecting Abuja’s master plan and ensuring all developments comply with approved land use laws.

Wike stressed that government cannot function in a lawless environment and that rules must apply equally to everyone. He urged all citizens to respect the law irrespective of their position or influence.

The minister also faulted sections of the media for misrepresenting his comments, urging journalists to practice accuracy and responsible reporting.

Reflecting on his experience as governor of Rivers State, Wike said his current approach is consistent with his belief in governance rooted in law and accountability. He admitted that his firmness might sometimes be mistaken for harshness but stressed that effective leadership often demands difficult decisions.
