Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri is reportedly poised to secure the 2023 Ballon d’Or, edging out Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who entered the day as a favorite for the prestigious award.

Following a remarkable year, Rodri, who clinched the Premier League title with City and lifted the European Championship trophy with Spain, is on track to become the first midfielder since Luka Modric in 2018 to receive the honor.

In the lead-up to tonight’s ceremony in Paris, Spanish media have hinted that the Ballon d’Or will be awarded to Rodri, prompting Vinicius’ camp and Real Madrid staff to withdraw from attending the 68th edition of the awards, according to AS. England international Jude Bellingham, another prominent nominee, is also reportedly set to skip the event.

The Ballon d’Or, managed by France Football, bases its decisions on a panel of 100 journalists from FIFA’s top 100-ranked countries, who consider players’ individual performances, team achievements, and sportsmanship. Despite the secrecy of the vote, speculation has intensified that Rodri will take the prize.

A win for Rodri would mark a high point in what has otherwise been a challenging season, as the 28-year-old recovers from a severe knee injury. His coach, Pep Guardiola, has openly praised the midfielder, telling TNT Sports, “He’s the best… If I could decide, I would say that.” Guardiola added, “I understand there are other players that can win it… but being nominated and being there is already nice.”

Rodri has been instrumental to City’s success, helping them secure a record fourth consecutive Premier League title, and leading Spain to triumph in the Euro 2024 championship, even as he exited at halftime in the final win against England.
