Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their technical staff have refused to train ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa play-off semi-final against Gabon, citing unpaid bonuses.

BBC Sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji disclosed that the squad and officials withheld participation in protest over outstanding allowances dating back to 2019. These payments reportedly cover achievements including reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and qualifying for the World Cup play-offs.
Reports indicate the team is awaiting a resolution to the payment issues before resuming preparations. A statement signed by players and technical staff noted that the full squad withheld training in Morocco due to unresolved financial matters. Multiple sources, including sports journalists present at the camp, have confirmed the boycott.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not yet responded to the situation. Nigeria is scheduled to face Gabon on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the final against either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo. The final victor will earn a place in the inter-confederation play-offs for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
