Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized the proposal by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review to create 31 new states in Nigeria.

He described the move as both ironic and comical, questioning its necessity given the financial struggles of existing states.

Reacting via his X page on Friday, Sani argued that many states already depend heavily on federal allocations for survival. He accused politicians of pushing for the new states to serve their personal interests rather than addressing the country’s economic realities.

“While many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives proposal for 31 states is ironic and comical. Politicians just want to carve out mini colonies for themselves,” he wrote.

The proposed states, if approved, would increase Nigeria’s sub-national governments from 36 to 67. The proposed states are distributed across the six regions, with North Central getting six new states, North East four, North West five, South East five, South-South four, and South West seven.

The process requires approval from the National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and Local Government Councils before becoming a reality.
