In letters to the Northern Governors Forum and the Northern Nigeria Traditional Leaders Forum, the senator warned against using state police as a tool for religious, political, or ethnic exclusion, which could further marginalize minority groups.
Addressed to Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State and the Sultan of Sokoto, the letters emphasized the importance of building a transparent and trustworthy policing system that protects all citizens equally.
Senator Sumaila expressed support for the National Assembly’s efforts to fast-track legislation on state police, describing it as vital for enhancing local security. He also reaffirmed his commitment to contributing to the process and recognized the key role of traditional leaders in ensuring community-based solutions.
He commended the forums for their efforts to address insecurity, noting that the ongoing violence has brought immense suffering to families and communities. He concluded by urging collective action to secure a peaceful and safer Northern Nigeria.
