Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), blaming the country’s worsening condition and calling for a total overhaul of the political system.

Amaechi made the announcement on Wednesday during the launch of the interim executive committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja. He described Nigeria as being in a state of complete collapse, pointing to the growing economic hardship, rising inflation, and food scarcity as signs of poor governance.

He criticised both the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing them of working together to manipulate upcoming elections. According to him, the challenges facing the country go beyond party politics and require a fundamental change in governance that empowers citizens.

The former minister disclosed that he left the APC on Tuesday night, having previously distanced himself from the party’s activities due to unresolved differences with its leadership. He stressed that changing the ruling party alone would not bring about the desired progress unless there is a shift in how power is exercised and how leaders are held accountable.

Amaechi also took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, questioning its ability to manage the country’s economic crisis. He noted that the value of the naira has plummeted further than it did under former President Muhammadu Buhari, and warned that any government that neglects the welfare of its people cannot justify its mandate.

On his future political ambitions, the former minister maintained that while he has a right to aspire, he remains cautious about pursuing power for its own sake, insisting that the focus should remain on rescuing Nigeria from its current decline.
