The 86-year-old pontiff will undergo further medical tests as part of his treatment.
His hospitalization follows his public acknowledgment of the illness during his general audience on Wednesday. The Pope, appearing frail, had to rely on an aide to read his prepared speech. “I’m still struggling with bronchitis, and I’m unable to read,” he said, expressing hope for a swift recovery.
In recent years, Pope Francis has faced multiple health challenges, including influenza and mobility issues that often require him to use a cane, walker, or wheelchair. He also suffered two falls in recent months, leading to injuries to his arm and chin.
