The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to introduce the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), a biometric document designed to assist Nigerians abroad whose passports have been lost, stolen, or expired to return home without difficulty.

The development was disclosed in a statement signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACI Akinsola Akinlabi.

According to the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, the new document will replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) as part of the agency’s ongoing reforms to improve identity management and strengthen border security in line with global standards.

She said the STEP will serve as a temporary travel document available at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates and will be valid for a single entry into the country. The initiative, she noted, underscores the Service’s commitment to efficient service delivery and enhanced identity protection for citizens.

Nandap unveiled the new policy during the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes held in Abuja and co-hosted by Nigeria and France.

The meeting brought together key migration stakeholders, including representatives from ECOWAS, the African Union, the European Union, NAPTIP, and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, among others.

Participants deliberated on strengthening cooperation to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking, with particular focus on prevention, protection, and prosecution along regional migration routes.
