The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has said that having too many political parties in Nigeria may hinder effective governance, adding that a one-party system might not be a bad idea if it reflects the will of the people.

Ganduje made the remark after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Friday, where he shared his views on the country’s political direction. He explained that if other parties decide to align with the APC because of its leadership and performance, it could be considered a democratic development.

Ganduje used the popular saying “too many cooks spoil the soup” to emphasize his view, suggesting that an overwhelming number of parties might lead to confusion and inefficiency in governance. He also pointed to China’s one-party model as an example of how a centralized political structure can promote stability and drive national progress.

According to him, the APC is not deliberately pushing for a one-party state, but would not resist it if it happens through the people’s support. He maintained that such a development would still fall within democratic norms if it is not imposed.

His comments follows a recent warning by former President Goodluck Jonathan, who cautioned that a one-party state could be dangerous if achieved through manipulation. Jonathan advised that such a political shift must be carefully planned by experts and not result from backdoor tactics.
