Kebbi State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halima Bande, clarified on Tuesday in Zuru that 26 students were taken during the attack, but two, Salma and Hauwa’u Liman, managed to escape and have been reunited with their families. “Only two have escaped so far,” she said, describing the situation as deeply traumatic for the girls’ parents, school staff, and the wider community. She added that the conditions under which the remaining 24 girls are being held, including their food, sleeping arrangements, and overall environment, remain unknown.
Bande stressed that circulating unverified reports on social media or in some news outlets could heighten anxiety and hinder the ongoing rescue operations. She urged journalists to rely solely on confirmed information, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, sensitivity, and responsible reporting.
The commissioner also stated that security forces are intensifying search operations while the state government maintains close communication with the families of the abducted students. She reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of all the girls and restoring peace in the affected communities.
