Athletes from Kano State, who participated in the 8th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State, have appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to address the issue of their inadequate camp allowances.

Speaking anonymously on Friday, the athletes expressed dissatisfaction with the daily allowance they received during the competition. They claimed it was significantly lower than that of their counterparts from other Northwestern states.
“We were given less than N20,000 for ten days, while athletes from Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara received N50,000. Jigawa athletes were paid the highest, receiving N80,000,” one of the athletes revealed.
Despite the disparity, Kano’s athletes managed to secure five gold, three silver, and one bronze medal in the competition. However, they urged the governor to intervene and rectify the situation.
The athletes also commended Kano State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, for his support of other athletes representing the state in sports such as football and basketball, and expressed hope for similar assistance in the future.
The National Youth Games, introduced by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013, aim to promote unity, peace, and understanding among youths, while tackling issues such as restiveness and unemployment across the country.
