World champion Tobi Amusan secured her place in the 100-meter hurdles semi-finals at the 2024 Olympics in Paris on Wednesday.

Amusan led the preliminary round with a time of 12.49 seconds, ahead of Alaysha Johnson of the USA, who clocked 12.61 seconds, and Jamaica’s Janeek Brown, who qualified with a time of 12.84 seconds.

Amusan is a top contender for the gold medal, but faces strong competition from Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, USA’s Johnson, world champion Danielle Williams, and reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday, August 9, with the final taking place on Saturday, August 10.

The 27-year-old has been in exceptional form leading up to the Games, setting a season-best and world-leading time of 12.40 seconds (0.9) at the Jamaican Athletics Invitational in Kingston in May. Earlier this year, she also set the African indoor record for the 60m hurdles twice in January and February.

In March, Amusan won her third consecutive African Games title in Ghana and helped secure gold in the women’s 4x100m relay in Accra. She also triumphed at the African Championships in Cameroon three months later.

This season, Amusan has participated in 17 events, including the 60m, 100m, 100m hurdles, and 4x100m relay.
