The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 new states in Nigeria, aiming to increase the number of sub-national governments to 67.

The proposal was formally presented during a plenary session on Thursday, with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu reading a letter outlining the plan.

To move forward with the creation of these new states, the National Assembly must pass an act, which requires approval from at least two-thirds of its members. In addition, the creation of the new states must be approved by the House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and Local Government Councils.

The proposed states are distributed across the six regions, with North Central getting six new states, North East four, North West five, South East five, South-South four, and South West seven.

Some of the proposed new states include Okun, Okura, and Confluence in Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa in Benue; and new states in the FCT. Others include Amana in Adamawa; Katagum in Bauchi; Savannah in Borno; Muri in Taraba; New Kaduna and Gujarat in Kaduna; Tiga and Ari in Kano; and Kainji in Kebbi.

In the South East, proposals include Etiti and Orashi, Adada from Enugu, and Orlu and Aba. In the South South, proposed states are Ogoja and Warri, along with Ori and Obolo. From the South West, proposed states include Torumbe, Ibadan, Lagoon, and others involving regions from Oyo, Ogun, and Osun.
