Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced a ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks across the state, linking it to increasing incidents of violence, cultism, prostitution, and other social vices.

The governor made the declaration on Tuesday while inaugurating a special committee to revoke licenses of unauthorized hotels, brothels, and shanty settlements suspected to harbor criminal activities in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

According to Zulum, the committee comprises members from the military, police, civil defense, and other security agencies. Their primary mandate is to dismantle criminal hideouts and restore sanity in the state.

He further expressed concern that some former and serving security personnel were influencing civilians into crime and radical ideologies, which he said had further escalated the threat of terrorism.

The governor stressed that the fight against insecurity must be thorough and uncompromising. “There should be no sacred cow in this matter,” he stated, urging collective responsibility among stakeholders to reclaim lasting peace in the region.
