The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded three points and three goals to Nigeria following the abandonment of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on October 15 in Benghazi.

The decision came after a CAF Disciplinary Board investigation into the incident, which saw Nigeria’s Super Eagles stranded at an abandoned airport in Libya for nearly a day, ultimately leading them to withdraw from the match.

CAF found the Libya Football Federation in breach of Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. In its statement, CAF detailed the ruling, declaring Libya’s forfeiture of the match, which officially awards Nigeria a 3-0 victory.

The five-point ruling from CAF reads as follows:

  1. The Libya Football Federation has breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations along with Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
  2. Match No.87, Libya vs. Nigeria in the 2025 CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers, is declared a forfeit by Libya, granting Nigeria a 3-0 win.
  3. Libya Football Federation is fined USD 50,000.
  4. The fine must be paid within 60 days of notification.
  5. All other requests and appeals are dismissed.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized CAF’s zero tolerance for unsportsmanlike behavior, saying, “We will not tolerate any lack of sportsmanship and unfair treatment in African football.”

The ruling advances Nigeria to ten points from four games, solidifying their position at the top of Group D.
