Musa made the announcement in a statement shared on social media on Wednesday, where he reflected on his journey and the pride of representing Nigeria.

He said the decision followed careful reflection, noting that wearing the green-and-white jersey from his first call-up was both an honour and a responsibility he carried throughout his career.
Musa recalled that he was still a teenager when he received his first invitation, having been called up simultaneously to the U-20, U-23 and senior teams. Despite the demands and constant travel, he said he never hesitated to answer Nigeria’s call.
The former Super Eagles captain finished his international career with 111 appearances, a record that makes him Nigeria’s most capped player, a milestone he described as a deep honour.
He was part of the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and made history at the World Cup, becoming the first Nigerian to score twice in a match against Argentina in 2014. He repeated the feat against Iceland in 2018, making him the first Nigerian to score in two different World Cups.
Musa said the 2013 AFCON victory and his four World Cup goals remain among the defining moments of his career and symbols of what it meant to play for Nigeria.
At club level, he returned to Kano Pillars in October 2024 for a third stint and is set to take on the role of general manager ahead of the 2025–26 season.
