Real Madrid climbed to the top of the La Liga table with a 2-1 win against Barcelona in the season’s first El Clasico at the Camp Nou Stadium on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men started off well as David Alaba opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box. Barcelona put the pressure on their opponents but failed to convert a single chance before Lucas Vazquez doubled the lead for Real Madrid in injury-time.

Sergio Aguero scored his first goal for the Catalan club in the dying seconds of the contest but the strike came too late.

Barca has now lost a fourth consecutive Clasico for the first time since 1965 and stays a lowly eighth in La Liga, five points behind Madrid, who surged back to the top of the table.

After beating Valencia and winning a crucial Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev this week, it represents a fresh setback for Barca and Koeman, whose future will again come under scrutiny.

Barcelona is back on the losing track thanks to a painful 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in El Clásico on Sunday. Almost 87,000 fans came to Camp Nou and saw Barça put up a good fight, but the Blaugrana didn’t take their chances and saw Madrid be ruthless in front of goal to escape with all three points.
