Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a respected leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, has passed away at the age of 96.
He died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State, on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025.

His family confirmed his passing in a statement released to the press, signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo. According to the statement, he was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.
A distinguished lawyer and former organizing secretary of the Action Group, Adebanjo was a prominent voice in the struggle for democracy and good governance in Nigeria. He served as the national leader of Afenifere and remained a staunch advocate for truth, equity, and justice throughout his life.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family expressed deep appreciation for his unwavering dedication to the ideals he championed, describing his legacy as one that will endure for generations.
Funeral arrangements are currently being made in consultation with friends, associates, and stakeholders across Nigeria and beyond. The family stated that details of the burial will be announced in due course.
