In a statement released on Tuesday, the NFF confirmed the appointment of the 47-year-old Malian tactician, stating, “The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has endorsed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr. Éric Sékou Chelle as Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men national football team, Super Eagles.”

The statement further explained that the decision was made following a meeting held by the NFF Technical and Development Sub-Committee on January 2, 2025, in Abuja. The recommendation was subsequently approved by the federation’s executive committee on January 7.

Chelle, who previously managed Mali’s national team, led them to the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where they were narrowly defeated in extra time by the host nation.

His first major test with the Super Eagles will come in March, with crucial qualifier matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Nigeria currently occupies fifth place in Group C, having failed to secure a win in four previous outings.
