Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany claimed the gold medal in the women’s shot put at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with a remarkable throw of 20.00 meters.

This victory marked Germany’s first gold in the event since Astrid Kumbernuss in 1996. Ogunleye’s achievement was celebrated with great enthusiasm as she draped herself in the German flag and rang the victory bell.

Born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Ogunleye’s performance was especially notable and unexpected.

New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche took the silver medal with a throw of 19.86 meters, while China’s Song Jiayuan earned the bronze with a distance of 19.32 meters.

Although Wesche had seemed poised for victory after setting a personal best on her fifth attempt, Ogunleye delivered a perfect response to secure the top spot.

While Nigeria did not have a representative in the women’s shot put event, it was represented in other throwing disciplines, including the men’s shot put, where Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finished sixth.
