Suspected members of the notorious Lakurawa bandit group have reportedly launched a deadly assault on a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) camp in Maje, a community in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in large numbers late Saturday night and opened fire on officers stationed at the facility. During the attack, one Customs officer was allegedly shot dead, and the building was set ablaze before the assailants fled, Punch reports.

Residents of the area said the sound of gunfire forced many people to flee for safety, leaving the community in fear and confusion.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kebbi State Government nor the Nigeria Customs Service had issued an official statement on the incident.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Customs Command, Muhammad Tajudeen, confirmed the attack and said the command was awaiting a medical report to ascertain the status of the affected officer.

The Lakurawa gang has been responsible for several violent incidents in the region. The same group was behind the recent abduction of the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Sama’ila Bagudo, who was released on Saturday night after spending about a week in captivity.
