The Kano State House of Assembly is deliberating on a new bill that seeks to make Hausa the primary language of instruction across schools in the state.

The proposed law, titled Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill, is sponsored by Hon. Musa Kachako, who represents Takai Constituency under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

According to Kachako, the move aims to strengthen students’ learning foundations and align Kano’s education system with international standards. He explained that many developed nations, such as China, Japan, and India, have recorded remarkable progress in science and technology through early education in their native languages.

He added that adopting Hausa as the main language of instruction would enhance comprehension, reduce academic failure, and curb school dropouts while preserving the state’s cultural heritage. “This bill promotes inclusivity and makes education more accessible,” Kachako stated.

The bill has been forwarded to the House Committee on Education for further consideration.

Meanwhile, another lawmaker, Hon. Zakariyya Nuhu, proposed the establishment of a College of Agriculture in Gabasawa to boost agricultural education and stimulate economic growth in the largely farming community.

The Assembly also received separate requests for the creation of a Polytechnic in Gaya and a Local Government Service Commission, which have been referred to the relevant committees for review.
