The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed five textile warehouses in Kano for engaging in deceptive trade practices involving the sale of underweight and shortened fabrics at full price.

The commission disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu. According to the statement, the enforcement action followed weeks of surveillance around major textile markets in Kano, which uncovered that some retailers were selling fabrics significantly below the indicated standard length while still charging consumers the full amount.

The affected warehouses were located at Gandun Abada Layout, Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Bua Rice Mills Street, Ajasa Inuwa Wada Road, and Gandun Albasa New Layout. Brands implicated in the act include LGR, U&Me, Nana Tex, among others.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, described the act as an exploitative practice that undermines fair competition and consumer trust. He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to upholding the provisions of Sections 123(1) and 125(1) of the FCCPA 2018, which prohibit false representation and deceptive marketing claims.

Bello commended the enforcement team and collaborating security agencies for their diligence, assuring that the commission will continue to clamp down on unfair market practices and ensure that Nigerian consumers receive fair value for their money.
