The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has sanctioned the Kano Electricity Distribution Company for overbilling customers without prepaid meters, in violation of approved billing guidelines.

According to a statement released by NERC on Thursday, seven other distribution companies were also penalised for similar offences. They include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, and Yola Electricity Distribution Companies.

NERC said the sanctions followed a review of estimated billing practices between July and September 2024, which showed the DisCos failed to comply with the 2020 capping order that limits charges for unmetered customers.

As a penalty, the commission imposed a combined fine of N628.03 million on the eight DisCos, representing five percent of the total overbilled amount during the period. The companies are also expected to issue credit adjustments to affected customers by May 15, 2025, marking the end of the April billing cycle.

NERC said the move is part of its continued effort to enforce regulatory compliance and protect the rights of electricity consumers in the country.
