Former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally barred from contesting in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement he issued through an opinion article, Justice Salami explained that the Nigerian Constitution limits any individual’s tenure as president to a maximum of eight years, adding that Jonathan has already exhausted his lawful eligibility.
The retired justice noted that Jonathan had served out the remainder of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s tenure before winning a full term of his own in the 2011 election. According to him, any attempt by Jonathan to seek another term would violate the constitutional provision on tenure.
He further explained that even if Jonathan were to contest and win, such a victory would not stand, as it would amount to a breach of the Constitution, making his aspiration for the 2027 presidency lawfully impossible.
