The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has inaugurated an office for online news publishers in the state, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting digital journalism and promoting collaboration among media practitioners.

The inauguration took place on Saturday during the Dinner and Award Night of the Kano State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano, marking the closing ceremony of the 2025 Journalists’ Week. Several individuals were honoured for their contributions to journalism in the state, including Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya; Kano State Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa; former Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye; and other veteran journalists.
Comrade Waiya said the initiative demonstrates the state government’s recognition of the growing role of online media platforms in public communication. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to journalists’ welfare and continuous training to ensure that media practitioners can adapt to changing trends in the sector.
Speaking at the event, NUJ National President Comrade Alhassan Yahya thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his efforts in advancing the state’s media sector. He also praised Commissioner Waiya for improving the livelihoods of journalists through transparency, accountability, and capacity-building programmes. Yahya commended veteran journalists for upholding the ethics and principles of journalism and noted that national-level initiatives, including health insurance schemes and enhanced pension plans, are being developed to further support journalists.
He also revealed that the NUJ is preparing to introduce a new innovation that will transform the way the union operates. Yahaya declared support for women journalists under the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), emphasizing initiatives that would allow them to showcase their talents and reach their full potential.
Comrade Yahya also stressed that modern journalism is critical in today’s society, urging practitioners to uphold integrity, professionalism, and adherence to journalistic ethics. He praised the Kano State NUJ for its inclusive leadership and programmes that align with ongoing changes in the media sector.
The Chairman of the NUJ, Kano State Council, Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, said the new office would strengthen collaboration, harmonize activities, and enhance engagement among journalists, particularly those working on digital platforms.
