Results of the inaugural Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024–First Series have been released by the West African Examinations Council, Nigeria.

The council began transitioning from traditional paper-based examinations to Computer-Based Examinations for its private candidates’ exams.

The council’s statement, which was made available on PUNCH Online, mentioned that the CB-WASSCE introduced a new approach. In this approach, all the questions were displayed on the computer using a hybrid method.

According to the report, the answers to the multiple-choice questions were provided on the computer in real-time, while the answers to the essay and practical test questions were given to the candidates in booklets.

The statement disclosed that the examination took place from Wednesday, January 31 to Saturday, February 17, 2024.

According to the analysis of candidates’ performance, it was found that 42.07% of the 8,139 candidates who took the examination achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of whether they included English Language and/or Mathematics.


The WAEC has recently announced the release of the WASSCE results, revealing that 44.29% of candidates achieved a credit score in five subjects. Additionally, a total of 2,519 candidates, accounting for 30.95%, obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.


The examiners and marking of candidates’ scripts took place at three different venues in Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna from March 1 to 16, 2024. 459 Examiners took part in the Coordination and Marking Exercise.

The number of candidates who applied this year was 8,362, which is 4.30% lower than the number of applicants in 2023, which was 8,738. A total of 8,139 candidates took part in the examination, which was held at 140 computer-based testing (CBT) centres located throughout the country.

Out of the pool of candidates who took the examination, there were 21 individuals who had different levels of Special Needs. Among this group, nine individuals had visual impairments, two had hearing impairments, and two had Albinism.

The statement emphasised that the administration of the examination took into consideration the needs of all candidates with special requirements.
