The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has launched a campaign to boost school enrollment in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Communication at Kano SUBEB, Alhassan Hassan, the event took place at Lausu Primary School, where officials encouraged parents and communities to ensure every eligible child gets a place in school, continues their education, and completes primary school.

Speaking at the launch, UBEC Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Garba represented by the commission’s Deputy Director of Technical Services, Mr. Razaq Olajuwon Akinyemi described the campaign as a vital step towards achieving universal primary education in Nigeria. She noted that UBEC is committed to improving learning environments by providing more teaching and learning materials, training teachers, and strengthening community participation through School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs).
“We must confront the challenges faced by both boys and girls, including children on the streets, those in the almajiri system, and those with special needs. This campaign needs the full support of all stakeholders to address the barriers keeping them out of school,” she said.
Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, represented by the Director of Quality Assurance at the Federal Ministry of Education, Bello Rabe, reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector.
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, commended the enrollment drive, saying his administration is dedicated to providing educational facilities, building new classrooms, and renovating existing ones. He added that the number of school uniforms to be distributed this year would double that of last year, to encourage more families to send their children to school.
The governor also directed school heads and stakeholders to ensure that within 30 days, every child of school age in the state is enrolled, in line with the national education plan for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Speaking on behalf of chairmen of Universal Basic Education Boards in Northern states, Kano SUBEB Chairman, Malam Yusuf Kabir, urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, communities, and education committees to support the initiative and ensure no child is left behind.
“The greatest investment any parent can make in a child’s life is enrolling them in school,” he said.
UNICEF’s Kano Chief of Field Office, Rahama Farah, represented by Michael Banda, stressed that enrollment is only the first step, adding that communities must also ensure children remain in school and complete their education.
The Emir of Rano, Alhaji Muhammad Umar Isah, called on parents to embrace the campaign and instructed district and ward heads to fully support it in their areas.
The event ended with the distribution of school supplies, bags, and books to new primary one pupils at Lausu Primary School in Rano.
