Two children lost their lives in Minna, Niger State, following a heavy downpour that triggered flash flooding in the Tunga area of the city on Tuesday.

The tragic incident involved a 9-year-old girl from Edo State and a yet-to-be-identified boy, whose bodies were discovered in a drainage channel.

Witnesses say the young girl had gone to the market with her 11-year-old brother to purchase ingredients for soup when she slipped into the floodwaters while trying to navigate the flooded road. Despite the brother’s desperate calls for help, she was swept away by the strong current.

He returned home to alert their parents. Her body was later found in a tunnel along Mandela Road, more than five kilometers from where she fell. Shockingly, another boy was found dead at the same location.

Officials from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) have said they will visit the bereaved family to gather further details and provide necessary support.
