Former US President Donald Trump is set to be charged over hush money payments made to an adult actress just before the 2016 presidential election.

This is the first time in American history that a current or former president has faced criminal charges.

CNN reports that the indictment has been filed under seal and will be announced in the coming days.

It is unclear what the charges are at the moment.

On Thursday, a grand jury voted to indict him on criminal charges, after investigating a $130,000 payout to Stormy Daniels, the adult actress, in an attempt to buy her silence over an alleged affair.

According to CNN, the office of Manhattan’s district attorney has been investigating the former president and will reach out to Trump’s attorneys to discuss his arrest and a subsequent arraignment.

Trump is currently the subject of multiple investigations into his conduct before, during, and after his first term as president.

The investigations include allegations of fraud by his family business, his role in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol, his attempt to overturn the 2020 election, and the stashing of classified documents at his residence at Mar-a-Lago.

He was also the subject of a $250 million civil lawsuit from the New York attorney general over allegations that he and his children were involved in a decade-long fraud.

Despite the allegations, Trump announced his bid to re-run for president.

He has frequently called the various investigations surrounding him a “witch hunt” and has portrayed himself as a victim of what he’s claimed are political probes led by Democratic prosecutors.
