The Sokoto state government has revealed that troops of the Nigerian Army have been deployed in Sabon Birni local government and other flashpoints days after armed bandits killed the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Bawa.

Daily News 24 reports that the state’s Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Sharifu Abubakar Kamarawa said this in an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday.

Mr Kamarawa explained that the state government has intensified efforts to curb the activities of bandits following the violent killing of the revered monarch.

The commissioner told the BBC that Sokoto state government had done all it could to rescue the late emir, whose killing he described as “unfortunate”.

“Security personnel both at the federal level and the NSA were informed and they have done their best to free the emir, but it was very unfortunate at the end of the day the bandits killed him”.

“It is not everything people will be informed regarding security issues,” he said.

Last week bandits killed Alhaji Bawa, after kidnapping him for three weeks, a situation that caused criticism against the state government.

Also reports indicated that just a day after the emir’s death, the bandits abducted 150 more residents in Sabon Birni area.
