Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant ruling, a three-member panel of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) has directed Multichoice Nigeria to grant subscribers on its DStv and GOtv platforms one month of free service.

The tribunal, led by Justice Thomas Okosu, also imposed a N150 million fine on the company for challenging the court’s jurisdiction.

This decision follows a recent injunction prohibiting Multichoice from increasing the prices of its subscription packages. Despite the tribunal’s order, Multichoice Nigeria raised its DStv and GOtv rates in May, prompting the tribunal’s latest ruling.

The tribunal had initially mandated Multichoice Nigeria Limited to stop the planned hike in subscription tariffs and the cost of its products and services, which was scheduled to commence on May 1. This directive was issued in response to concerns about the financial burden on consumers.

The ruling emphasizes the tribunal’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring compliance with regulatory orders.
