Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s failure to visit Yelwata in Benue State following a deadly attack that claimed over 200 lives, describing it as a clear sign of weak leadership.

Obi, in a statement, expressed dismay over Tinubu’s excuse of bad road and weather conditions as the reason for his absence, insisting that a president who truly values the lives of his citizens would find a way to be present, especially in times of tragedy.

“A true leader doesn’t make excuses when people are dying. If the roads are bad, what happened to the presidential helicopters? Nigerians deserve empathy and action, not explanations,” Obi stated.

The former governor of Anambra State questioned the rationale behind avoiding the affected community due to infrastructure challenges, stressing that if the president himself cannot navigate Nigerian roads, there is little hope for the ordinary citizen.

He condemned what he described as continued neglect of vulnerable communities, particularly in times of crisis, urging the federal government to prioritise compassion and responsibility over convenience.

According to Obi, rebuilding Nigeria requires leaders who lead by example, show up when it matters most, and demonstrate the willingness to sacrifice personal comfort for national healing.

He concluded by calling for a new era of leadership that is rooted in empathy, decisive action, and genuine concern for the welfare of all Nigerians.
