The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on Thursday. The session, which was attended by cabinet ministers and top government officials, included tributes to Buhari’s leadership and a moment of silence in his memory.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu praised Buhari as a man of integrity, discipline, and patriotism. He said Buhari’s leadership brought a moral tone to governance, marked by transparency, justice, and quiet courage. The president noted that Buhari’s incorruptible nature left a lasting impression on the nation’s political landscape.
The decision to rename the university was described as a symbolic gesture aimed at preserving Buhari’s legacy. The institution, located in Nigeria’s northeast, a region that experienced significant insurgency, was a focus of reconstruction efforts under Buhari’s administration.
According to Tinubu, the move serves as a permanent institutional honor to a man whose impact on governance and national unity will be remembered for years to come.
