President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.

In a statement on Monday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said the decision was aimed at preserving Sule’s legacy and encouraging future generations to embrace values such as integrity, patriotism, and nationalism.
The late statesman, who lived from 1929 to 2017, made significant contributions to Nigeria’s political and diplomatic landscape. He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he led the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid. Sule also held key positions, including Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960), Minister of Mines and Power, and the country’s first Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints (1976).
The institution is among the seven specialised universities of education established by the Federal Government and remains dedicated to training educators to enhance the nation’s education system.
