The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, in a press statement dated November 14, 2025. Marwa, who first assumed the role in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now lead the agency until 2031.
Before joining the NDLEA, Marwa chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020 and brings extensive military and diplomatic experience. He is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, has served as brigade major, aide‑de‑camp to the former Army Chief, and defence adviser to Nigeria’s UN mission. He holds master’s degrees from Harvard University and the University of Pittsburgh.
Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has arrested roughly 73,000 drug traffickers and seized over 15 million kilograms of illicit substances, while running nationwide anti‑drug campaigns.
President Tinubu commended Marwa’s work and urged him to continue combating drug abuse and building on the agency’s achievements.
