The announcement was made through a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) on Monday. The committee is to be chaired by the SGF, Senator George Akume, and will be responsible for planning a befitting funeral ceremony in honour of the late president, whose political and military career shaped Nigeria for more than fifty years.
The committee includes key figures such as the Ministers of Finance, Defence, Works, Interior, Information, FCT, Housing, Art and Culture, and the Minister of State for Health. Others are the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, as well as top aides to the President on policy and political matters.
The Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, will serve as the committee’s secretariat.
In line with the President’s directive, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are to open condolence registers at their entrances. Central registers for members of the public and diplomatic corps have been placed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
President Buhari, who first ruled Nigeria as a military leader from 1984 to 1985 and returned as an elected president from 2015 to 2023, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.
