The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arrested Kunya for spraying and trampling on Naira notes while dancing in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, an act deemed to violate Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.
She was initially arrested in January 2025 and granted administrative bail. However, she failed to appear in court and went into hiding, prompting a manhunt by the EFCC. Operatives rearrested her on March 16, 2025, and she was arraigned on May 20, where she admitted guilt to the amended one-count charge.
During the court session, EFCC counsel, Musa Isah, reviewed the facts of the case and urged the court to convict her.
In his ruling, Justice Amobeda sentenced Kunya to six months’ imprisonment with an option of N50,000 fine. The court also appointed her as a social media ambassador for the EFCC and CBN, mandating her to run advocacy campaigns against Naira abuse.
Kunya is expected to use her large online following to educate the public on the value of the Naira and the legal implications of abusing it.
