A violent mob attacked the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) outpost in Semegu, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday night, following the death of a suspected phone thief during a robbery attempt in Gwazaye community.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the NSCDC Kano State Command on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. According to the command, the incident began around 8pm on June 2, when two hoodlums armed with knives attempted to snatch a mobile phone from a resident who was making a call. One of the assailants reportedly engaged the victim in a struggle but was overpowered and fatally stabbed in the neck, allegedly in self-defence.

The resident, accompanied by three neighbours, went to the NSCDC outpost to report the incident. However, shortly after their arrival, a group of armed individuals launched an attack on the civil defence office, apparently under the mistaken belief that the security officers had been responsible for the death of the suspect.

The NSCDC stressed that none of its personnel were involved in the confrontation that led to the death. The command noted that the outpost was merely performing its duty of receiving the report when it came under attack.

“To set the record straight, civil defence officers neither maimed nor killed any suspected thug in the area,” the statement emphasized.

The case has now been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kano State Police Command for further investigation and appropriate action.

The NSCDC urged the public to remain calm and allow the police to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry.
