The House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security has raised alarm over threats by terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, disclosed this on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate, which will define the qualification and conditions of service for the Sergeant-at-Arms and other personnel of the Directorate.

He also revealed that some lawmakers have been receiving threats from protesters planning to blockade the National Assembly. According to him, the complex has faced several security challenges, including theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access, all of which pose risks to legislators, staff, and visitors.
Muhammad said the proposed bill was critical to strengthening security within the legislature and aligning its operations with global best practices. He noted that if the growing security lapses were not addressed, they could disrupt the work of lawmakers and affect key functions such as representation, oversight, and the budget process.
He stressed that managing security effectively requires a comprehensive approach that balances openness with safety, ensuring that the legislature remains accessible while adequately protected. Muhammad also called on state Houses of Assembly to adopt similar security measures to safeguard their institutions.
